스포츠란 무엇인가
우리 주변에서 넘쳐나는 스포츠 용어에 대해서 너무나 익숙하여 이제는 일상용어가 되었다. 스포츠카, 스포츠웨어, 스포츠마사지, 스포츠댄스, 스포츠 신문 등 스포츠와 관련되지 않는 것들이 없다는 생각마저 든다. 일상대화에서도 날씨보다는 스포츠가 대화의 주제를 이루고 있다. 국가차원에서 경마, 경정, 경륜 등의 합법화된 도박을 통해서 수입을 올리고 있을 정도이다. 프로야구, 프로축구, 프로농구의 인기는 여전히 높기만 하다. 월드컵 축구는 전국을 환희의 도가니로 만들었다. 도대체 스포츠가 뭘까? 많은 학자들이 이 문제에 대하여 진지하게 정의를 하고 있지만 여전히 공통된 정의는 찾기 어렵다. 우리에게 스포츠란 무엇인가. 이 문제를 스포츠영화를 통하여 알아보자.
스포츠영화는 스포츠를 소재로 한 모든 영화를 의미하지는 않는다. 스포츠 그 자체의 문제의식을 가지고 만들어진 영화를 스포츠영화라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이미 제작되어 알려진 많은 스포츠 영화들 중에서 스포츠영화의 진수를 보여줄 수 있는 3편의 영화를 찾아보았다.
첫째가 대학스포츠의 문제를 제기한 영화 ‘샤킬 오닐의 NBA 챔프(Blue chips, 1994)’이다. 이 영화는 미국대학스포츠의 현 주소를 진지하게 보여주려는 감독의 의도를 엿볼 수 있다. 대학농구리그에서 우승하기 위해서 가장 중요한 것은 우수한 선수를 확보하는 일이다. 어떤 선수를 확보하느냐가 바로 학교의 우승과 감독의 자존심을 회복시켜 주는 일이다. 이러한 현실적인 유혹으로부터 자유로울 수 있는 자는 누구인가. 우리는 미국의 대학스포츠를 벤치마킹해야 한다고 역설하고 있지만 미국도 이 문제에서 역시 자유롭지 못하다. 이러한 문제의 원인은 대부분 극단적인 승리지상주의에서 찾는다. 그렇다면 승리란 무엇인가.
두 번째 영화 ‘불의 전차(chariots of fire, 1981)’는 스포츠에서의 승리의 의미를 보여주고 있다. 대부분의 학자들은 현대 스포츠문제의 원인 중에 하나를 승리지상주의에서 찾고 있다. 승리를 추구 하는 것은 스포츠에서 꼭 필요한 것이다. 만약 스포츠에서 승리를 추구 하지 않는다면 재미는 사라지고 만다. 우리가 추구 하는 승리는 전광판의 숫자로 나타나는 현상과 결과 위주의 승리에 불과하다. 이러한 승리에 매몰된다면 극단적인 승리지상주의에서 기인된 비인간성의 문제를 안게 될 것이다. 지금까지 우리는 실재와 의미로서의 승리가 존재한다는 것을 잊고 있었다. 남에게 보여주기 위한, 자기 자신을 소외시키고 결국 타자로 만드는 승리는 더 이상 승리라고 할 수 없다. 가장 큰 승리는 자기 자신에 대한 승리이다. 타자의 시선에서 자유로울 때 진정한 승리를 하게 되는 것이다.
이 영화에서 두 명의 주인공이 등장한다. 해럴드 아브라함과 에릭 리델이다. 이 영화에서 해럴드는 승리를 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 전형적인 승부사의 기질을 보여준다. 해럴드는 당시 대학생에게 개인 코치를 두면 안 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이를 무시하고 무사비니라는 개인코치를 두고 승리하게 된다. 선교사인 에릭 리델은 종교적 신념 때문에 안식일에 열린 100미터 결승전 경기에 참가를 포기한다. 결국 현상과 결과만을 추구한 해럴드와 실재와 의미를 추구했던 에릭은 모두 승리하였지만 이들의 승리는 큰 차이를 보여주고 있다. 그 차이는 의미의 차원에서 비교할 수 있을 것이다. 이 땅에서 현상과 결과로서의 승리만을 지향하기 때문에 과정으로서의 승리는 퇴색하고 있다.
이 영화 속의 유니폼을 유심히 보면 흰색의 유니폼이 주류를 형성하고 있다. 지금과 비교하면 유니폼의 칼라는 상업주의 침투를 여실히 보여준다. 순수하기만 했던 스포츠는 다국적 기업의 움직이는 광고판이 되었다. 지금처럼 무한대의 빠름이 유일한 잣대로 평가되는 사회에서 선수들은 초시계를 향해서 무한질주 하는 모습으로 보여진다. 사람의 모습보다는 기계를 연상하게 한다. 이러한 문제는 경제적 논리 때문이라고 할 수 있다. 로제 카이와가 지적한 것처럼 지나친 경쟁과 승리추구는 스포츠의 타락을 가져오게 한다. 스포츠에서 인간 정신성의 상실은 동물들의 유치한 싸움에 지나지 않을 수 있다는 것이다. 놀이성, 진지함, 육체성, 유희성의 상실은 스포츠의 타락을 가져온다. 우리는 늘 고향 회귀를 꿈꾸며 살고 있다. 타향에서 이방인으로 삶을 살아가면서 고향을 그리워하는 삶의 모습처럼 스포츠 역시 고향을 찾고 있다. 지금은 고향상실의 전형이라고 할 수 있는 스포츠 타락의 모습을 보여주고 있다.
이러한 고향회복의 길을 세 번째 영화 ‘리벰버 타이탄(Remember the Titans, 2001)’에서 찾아보자. 이 영화에서는 흑인과 백인의 인종문제를 미식축구를 통해서 풀어간다. 흑인과 백인 통합의 고등학교가 가진 문제, 지역사회의 문제를 고등학교 미식축구팀이 서로간의 작은 관심으로 불신의 단절을 허물고, 소통하고, 화해하고, 나아가 상생을 모색하는 과정을 보여준다. 미식축구는 특성상 모든 선수가 하나로 움직일 때 가능한 경기이다. 대립과 갈등은 승리의 걸림돌이다. 하지만 소통과 화해는 상생의 힘을 가져와 승리에 근접하는 힘을 준다. 소통이 없이는 모두 패배자가 될 수 있다.
사람만이 희망이라고 한다. 스포츠의 타락을 해결할 수 있는 것 또한 사람이다. 블루칩의 피트 벨 코치, 불의 전차의 에릭 리델, 리벰버타이탄의 허만 분 코치 등에게 기대를 할 수 있을 것이다. 이들은 우리에게 스포츠란 무엇인지를 말해주고 있다. 직접 땀을 흘리면서 스포츠의 참맛을 체험하고 스포츠의 이해를 하는 가운데서 스포츠를 알 수 있는 것이다. 참 나를 찾는 자기 인식과 타자의 시선에서 자유를 맛보는 것이 스포츠에서 진정한 승리이다. 이처럼 타자의 시선에서 자유를 찾을 때 스포츠에서 소외되지 않고 자신의 스포츠를 하는 것이다. 이것이 우리에게 스포츠란 무엇인가를 말해주는 것이다.
